Sprinklings: spider webs

So I was up until 1:30 this morning with poor Sneaky B.  She had major gas and finally after a five-minute bout of farting, she passed out. Poor thing, she is so gassy, maybe because she snorts like a pig when she is hungry (I will find a way to share her piggy self with you, I know she will “appreciate” that when she’s older) and swallows air, who knows I’m just guessing at the parenting thing. Any-who-

When I’m tired I feel like hanging out at home and since it’s October and we wandered around the dollar store yesterday for Halloween decorations, we might as well get into the spirit and decorate at bit.

“Mommy we haven’t done art together in ages”- guilt ridden mama had to make time today to do some art with Kiddo. Oye I feel horrible. So with decorating on hold, it’s time to be creative with Kiddo. Remembering a project from decades ago, we gathered our supplies and got messy.

Pasta, Glitter Spider Webs

spidercollage

What you will need, very simply, pasta, glitter & glue.

Supplies: plastic plates or cardboard & plastic wrap, a large bowl and a bit of patience

First, Mama cooks some pasta, al-dente please.  Added bonus- if your kid likes spaghetti cook extra from lunch, my kiddo always chokes on spaghetti so no added bonus for us today.

While the spaghetti is cooking,  I drew a picture of a spider web on paper, to help kiddo out a bit, and covered it with plastic and Kiddo got “Fashy” to be creative.

spiderkiddoCollageWhen you have al-dente spaghetti let it cool then your ready to get messy!

spider2CollageAdded the cooked spaghetti to the bowl, cover it with glue and glitter and mix it up with your hands. Then create spider webs on the plastic cardboard or plate.  Add some extra glue and glitter why not, and then let them dry (this takes FOREVER! like 24 hours FOREVER).  Once they are dry carefully pull them off the plastic and hang them up.

spiderwebsCollagePretty cute for a quick project, but more important got to spend time with Kiddo doing art.signature

“Sneaky B’s” Nursery!

I know you have been waiting on pins and needles to see our master closet turned into Sneaky B’s nursery so here you go!

madisonsnursery

So this space was originally our master closet, we will call it a master closet because it is attached to the master bedroom.  Each side has a five foot opening to a six foot by two foot space of hanging clothes and behind the pink hanging fabric is a second door to the bathroom.  About two years ago, we changed this space to be his and her’s offices, mine was on the left, Hubby’s on the right. When we did that, we added a wall to wall hanging closet system in the master bedroom (thank you ikea!).

Today it’s a super cute (I think) nursery space for our sneaky baby who is due to arrive in less than 20 days! Can you believe it? I sure can’t, most of the time…but then, that’s just a “due date” right? It’s anyones guess when she will decide she is ready to “pop on out of that belly” as Kiddo says.

So here is how it went down. After days of clearing out (a special thanks to my Mama who helped big time with this!) and collecting new and thrifted items, it was time to put everything together.

madisondetailsThe starting point was the fabric that is hanging behind the crib, like wallpaper.  I loved the colors, not really baby girl but still girly enough without being all pink. Next came the birds, for some reason I wanted birds in the nursery space. Confession time…I hate birds, chickens, feathered friends. I don’t want them close to me, I don’t like that they poop while they fly, I don’t want to touch the feathers Kiddo finds EVERYWHERE, I don’t mind looking at them from far away, but yuck I don’t like them, so why I needed to have birds in the nursery I have no idea.  At least they don’t have feathers and these ones are cute.

madison

Okay, so back to the space.  I had to find a “mini” sized crib, and thanks to the internet, that was super easy.  This one is DaVinci Emily Convertable Mini Crib in white, I found it at diapers.com.

mad11The chair I found at Ikea, it’s not what I was originally thinking, something soft, cozy, white…but I sat in this and loved it. Done. The piece next to the chair and the dresser where thrifted.  Happy day!

maddresser

The dresser was very dark but fantastic quality, so a bit of white paint = super cute dresser! Kiddo helped out too, with painting the space, she is a pro now that she helped paint her room you know.

So there you have it, Sneaky B’s Nursery. And now we wait… we are so excited for the day Sneaky B “pops on out of this tummy!”signature

We are getting so zzzzzzzzzzz

Alright, here we go, take 20 I think, in attempting to blog.  Let me tell you, it’s not that I don’t have a ton to share.  Here’s how it goes: Kiddo goes to bed, “dinner” dishes (my poor June Clever self has almost left the building… dinner as of late has been sad…but no one is starving) are done, pull out the laptop, get relatively comfy on the sofa, log in to wordpress, then I’m woken up by Hubby walking in the front door, home from school already… how on earth can it be 945 at night, I didn’t type one word. I keep falling asleep!  It’s so annoying but I have to accept it I guess, I am just to busy for my own good.  Freelance projects (yay!), summertime fun with Kiddo, normal household chores (most of them), getting ready for Sneaky Baby and being 9+months preggers, it makes sense to be passing out tired around 730. Oye!  It’s still annoying, but I guess it’s my world as of now

Okay to the fun stuff! We are basically ready for Sneaky baby to arrive!  Her nursery is almost done, just need to hang 3 pictures and put the sheets on the crib. Our room got a little make over too, there is nothing like new bedding I tell you! The office/dining room just needs one shelf hung, although I really really want new dining chairs now (future project- YES!) and Kiddo’s room has been completed for a few weeks now.  Drum roll please…Kiddo’s room: (you can see the before here)

kroom1Not a lot of change, but dark pink (the only color in the world) and not so “flowery”

kroom2

Gosh she has way to much stuff! And we donated bags of toys too… note to self Kiddo doesn’t need anything else. The princess silhouettes we made a few weeks ago turned out pretty cute I think.

While we have been cleaning out our little home, I do find it crazy annoying for my nesting self, yet funny at how unbelievably messy cleaning out can be.  Case in point…

cleaning2

cleaning4

Not to mention, the stacks and stacks of crap we had hidden in closets.  Really, this beautiful pile was over two feet high

cleaning5And of course, one of the best yet, “O” magazine about de-cluttering pulled out from under the bed.  Although cleaning out is exhausting, truly it feels like we are moving, it is so nice to know that there isn’t one thing in this little home that we don’t need. Plus the amount of donations we have made is amazing…car loads (at least 5) off to our local SPCA.  Good for the heart I tell ya.

Stay tuned… I will be sharing the other spaces, if I can keep my eyes open, maybe even tomorrow 😉signature

Showered with love

Last week I was feeling the love and this week I was showered with love with another baby shower for this Sneaky baby of ours. What I lucky girl I am!

shower2.1

This weekend was a baby shower with friends.  Let me tell you I have the best ones around. It was a beautiful day…perfect.  Really I could go on and on, but one of my friends who threw the shower for me blogged about it already, so instead of reinventing the wheel, you can read all about it here 🙂

Okay…wasn’t that a truly “Martha” event… Love those ladies.

cousinlove
A rare moment of quite…. I think it lasted 15 minutes

We also had my Mama, Niece and Nephew stay over for the weekend. Wow! Three kids in our tiny place that is in the middle of rearranging and removing of crap, who are all so excited to see each other…. well let’s just say if I wasn’t preggers  I would have been participating in the cocktails with Hubby and Mama for sure!  It’s 5 o’clock somewhere!  But truly I do love them, love seeing them and wish they lived closer!

The Kiddo’s room was updated last week too. One thing we did was a little art project Kiddo saw on Pinterest, )Yes my 4 year old Kiddo loves to look at Pinterest with me for projects to do… love her!) What she actually said was “I really, really, really want that in my Big Sister room.” Okay will do and we did.  And it was easy….here are the steps:

First find simple images on the web of the princesses of choice, or anything for those without princess loving kiddos, and print them out.  I enlarged the image, and printed each quarter of the image and typed it together.

mermaid

Then cut out the image and tape on top of the final paper for your silhouette, tape a lot to hold the image in place.  I used dark pink wrapping paper…shocking!  If you are not super stealthy with cutting you might want to use a thicker paper, it might be a bit more forgiving.

Once the silhouette is cut out, double stick tape to your background paper, I used simple white poster board, frame and hang.

silotteart

Super cute little girl, I mean Big Sister, art for pennies.

More of the Kiddo’s Big Sister room to come later this week, I know you are sitting at the edge of your seat to see it (giggle)…signature

The massive, overwhelming to do

We have been so busy, it’s exhausting! As in I have been reading a book now for two months and I am only on page 50, I just pass out by the time I climb into bed, arrange the crazy amount of pillows around by huge belly, grab my book and zzzzzzz— out cold.  With the end of the school year craziness (even for a pre-schooler), a few free-lance design projects in the works, planning for Sneaky baby and being 30 weeks pregnant, it all makes me tired.

IMG_6135

And today I’m overwhelmed. Totally and completely. It’s the first day in weeks kiddo and I just stayed home. Being home all day made me realize how much needs to be done before August. I spent most of the morning wandering around our small home, just wandering. Looking at furniture, walls, paintings, the dirty carpet, the dining chairs I can’t stand anymore, the kiddos room, the coo-coo clock still in the box, the mirrors I want to hang, the massive pile of laundry (didn’t I just do the laundry?)…just wandering around thinking “I need to get busy, but where to start?”

IMG_6102By the time Kiddo was ready for lunch, I decided to stop wandering around and just make “THE” to do list. “That’s what needs to happen, write it all down, make a plan, that will be the best thing to do.”   Five pages later, it’s all on paper, or it’s at least started. And seeing the list doesn’t make me crazy, it’s almost calming, almost being the key word, it’s still overwhelming – very, but I know what needs to happen.

Among the list are things I will be sharing, like how we are going to change our office closets (which was at one point was our master closets) into Sneaky baby’s nursery.  A tutorial or two will be coming too.  Many things to sew and create are on my list for the nursery.

Kiddo’s room will be transformed too. Since she is the big sister, her room will be first, she already picked out the fabric. We have a few projects planned too, thanks to Pinterest and the fact that I have gotten Kiddo addicted to looking at my boards for “something creative to do,” secretly I am very proud of this.

There are many steps to getting ready but it all starts Friday, when my mama is coming up to help me start packing a few things up for storage and Saturday when Hubby will be moving furniture around…

Any-who, I hope you will be along for this 8 week ride into transforming our little 1000 square foot home to welcome Sneaky baby in mid-August.  I am sure there will be great successes, quite a few laughs and probably a few tears- albeit hormones or otherwise.signature

Today brings an entire new….

meaning & a tutorial of sorts.

Happy Mama’s day to all the mama’s out there. It’s extra special for me. The shock of the wonderful surprise of having a baby in a few months has finally worn off.  Don’t get me wrong, I am still very overwhelmed at times, but so giddy it’s ridiculous  I can honestly say when I was preggo with Kiddo, I loved feeling her kick, but now with Sneaky-B it’s an entire new level of love. That is to say, I never thought I would feel a baby kicking in my belly again. As the mama’s know it’s an awesome feeling and I am more than ever cherishing every little movement Sneaky-B has.

Today I got to spend the morning at the Antique Flea Market in Sacramento with my good friends and my mama. It’s was so much fun! Why hadn’t I gone to this before? I don’t know, it might have to become my monthly mama outing. Here’s what I scored:

findsI have been looking for a coo-coo clock for quite some time, don’t really know why, but I have always wanted one. Am very excited about it. The coo-coo clock and the mailbox will both be getting a facelift, you know I will share the outcome with you. For today, I have a simple paper rosette award to show you.

mama1

I made this little canvas for my mama for today. I think it turned out cute and she loved it.  Happy Day. Here are the steps to make the paper rosette for the award.

madset1

Start by cutting out a few strips of paper. The width should be half of the size you want your completed rosette to be. For example, I wanted my finished rosette to be 3 inches across, so each strip is 1 1/2″ wide. The length is really up to you, the longer it is the fuller the rosette will look. Here I used 8″ paper, so over all I had 24″. Accordion fold each strip folding back and forth about a 1/4″ wide folds. Glue the accordion stips together to form one piece. Let that dry for a few minutes then glue into a cylinder (see left photo below).

madset2Now that you have let your accordion cylinder dry for a few minutes, take a scrap of paper, smaller than your final size rosette will be, add some glue to this. Pinch in the top of the cylinder and gently push down… waa-la…you have an paper rosette. Carefully lift this up and set in on top of the paper scrap with glue. Set something a bit heavy on top of rosette to keep it in place while it dries, I use the glue bottle.

madset3When it’s dry, add some cute cut outs, buttons, reinstones, whatever you want…ta da… a super cute paper rosette award.

Thanks for reading this random mama’s day post… it’s a bit all over the place, kind of like me lately. signature

PR packets…finally

There is nothing like getting away for the weekend to get my creative juices finally flowing again.  Happy day!!

One of the many to do items that has been haunting me for months is to make a PR packet to advertise Vintage Princess by ME to baby boutiques in the area. Good idea right?  I my mind I was going to do this after my first craft show, so I could have my inventory selling is shops and on etsy.  Well, it’s two and a half months later and I am finally doing it.

PRSo I made a “post card” with images of the clothes, letterhead, envelops and labels. It didn’t take forever or cost a small fortune. Double score!

shopcard_4blogThe card turned out super cute, didn’t it?  I am in the process of editing a form like letter, well let’s be real- the proofreading hubby is editing my letter, to introduce myself and my work. Then off the packets will go and we wait and see what happens.  I figure someone will like my work or not, but I am trying and that’s what matters.

I am going to make one showcasing my furniture and cabinetry design too and send it out.  Why not, I would love to get back into that world too.

day 29: a series of 9 – 1

9-1I can’t say that the series of 9 canvases are completed. I have one left. One.  And it’s making me bonkers.

It didn’t help that I woke up this morning with a nasty cold.  Really what the heck? I was totally fine yesterday, this morning I felt like I was hit by a ton of bricks. And kiddo, she didn’t even want to go to the park with her BFF for a few hours… shocking. So we had a not-so-lazy, lazy day.  Not-so-lazy lazy day? Yes. We stayed in our ‘jamas all day but I did make a to do list, and almost completed everything.  The day is still young, it’s only 4pm, so I will probably get a few more of these things done. As you can see, Canvases is on this list… arg!

Notice at the bottom of list I put, "Write to do list" that when, there is always something to check off right away :-)
Notice at the bottom of list I put, “Make to do list” that way there is always something to check off right away 🙂

I finished the “Myles” canvas pretty quickly.  I only had a few details left to finish up. I think it turned out pretty good for a novice painter.  Then I just stared at the blank ninth canvas.  After finishing a few other to do items, I painted it orange, thinking that corner needed a bit of orange. Now what? I don’t know. I thought of a carrot or an orange, but I think that’s the color talking to me.  Making me bonkers!

9close

Canvases Left to Right starting at top:

  • Hubby’s Quote: he has always wanted this saying hanging in the house, he finally got it
  • 3: The power of the number 3, we are a 3 person family, I have a connection to the number 3.
  • ARG!: help!
  • Myles: our kitty
  • Our wedding logo: we had a beach-y, picnic-y, laid back kind of party wedding
  • Chevron glitter stripes
  • Kiddo’s painting: stripes because “she wanted to”
  • Kiddo’s heart hands
  • My quote: it speaks to me, I like it.

This last canvas is making me crazy.  I looked back to my sketch book where i sketched and jotted down ideas for this project. Funny- I wrote down 9 canvases, but had 8 drawn and 8 ideas circled. Guess I couldn’t count that day.  The ideas I scratched then, still don’t work.

This is making me crazy, and of course now I am fixating on it. I don’t like being stuck like this.  Any ideas? Really I would love any ideas.signature

day 22: A vanity of her own

IMG_5879“I feel pretty, oh so pretty, I feel pretty and witty and bright” I love it when kiddo sings this song.  I have no idea where she learned it, but I love it. She is a girly girly who likes to get dirty.  For Christmas she got a make-up set and a salon set, so of course she was in need of a vanity. Luckily for her, I like to be creative and figured out a super easy way to make one.

beforeIn college I made this table. Yep made it all by myself, I had to take a furniture construction class because if I “was going to design furniture I should know how to make it”.  It was actually a pretty fun class except for the table saw and after seeing a class mates table top fly across the room and impale the lockers I was freaked out by the table saw. Anyway, back to the table. We have been moving this around for years now and I thought it would be the perfect improvement and a great start for the kiddos vanity.

layoutoptI drew out a vanity “shape” and had hubby cut it out of ply-wood.  Then using my fabric hord, I found a piece that I have always loved and thought it would be perfect.

fabricI used the vanity top as a pattern and cut around it with a half inch seam.  Measured for length, cut out all the pieces sewed them together.  Added a tule ruffle at the bottom, why not right.  I used binder clips to hold the top to the table, so not the “proper” way but works. And just like that it was done.

IMG_5877A “vintage” vanity perfect for the almost 4 year old going on 16.  An absolute improvement to the table too.  Now I need a vanity of my own, adding it to the need to thrift list for suresignature
